    Abstract : Sleep in space may be affected by many factors. These include mission characteristics, confinement, microgravity, vibration, noise, work load, light, space motion sickness, excitement, stress, shift work and disruption in circadian rhythm, etc. The space environment is inhospitable to humans, the lack of sleep can result in fatigue, distraction, and performance decrement. The countermeasures are so far nap, medicine, sleeping bag, the adjustment of time for exercise, light, and so on, but the effects of these are questionable. We should develop more specific countermeasures for long duration mission like Mars exploration.

    항공안전에 있어서의 조종사 피로관리 고찰

    Abstract : The fatigue is the highest physiological factors that cause the flight accident and also accidental damage is very severe. For this reason, it is encouraged to be included in ‘National priority actions list’ for managing strictly. International aviation organizations such as ICAO, FAA and EASA conduct different angles of review and apply FRMS (Fatigue Risk Management System) and international standards for fatigue management. This is also considered in the military field like US Air Force. In this study, we investigate the trends and measures for the fatigue management of pilots in aviation safety management into a multi-faceted perspective. First, we study causes, symptoms and phenomena about pilot fatigue and examined approaches for pilot fatigue management in civil/military aviation areas through various regulations. One investigates FLT (Flight Time Limitation), FRMS and information of fatigue measurement system on the organizational side as countermeasures for fatigue. Moreover, on the personal side, sleep management, napping, drug treatment for alertness maintain, caffeine intake, exercise and relaxation methods, etc. were considered. The awareness of fatigue, fatigue management development, integrating SMS (Safety Management System) and ORM (Operation Risk Management) into fatigue management, fatigue voluntary reporting system and fatigue management by FOQA/LOSA should be considered for effective and progressive fatigue management.

    항공기 조종사의 안전한 비행을 위한 약물 복용 유의사항

    Abstract : Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are usually approved for use in flight while some are not. The laboratory results showed that pilots are often motivated to consider the use of OTC medications. But those who do not have enough knowledge or have inappropriate information sometimes have to make proper decisions on OTC drug usage under more complicated constraints of a safety-critical job. To better understand how pilots come to use OTC drugs, this paper provides a summing-up suggestion for pilots’ decisions about using OTC drug products. In this paper factors were discussed that could influence drug trends and some guidance for safe medication were presented. In addition, the author argues that pilots should be provided with additional guidance when making decisions about OTC drug use.

    대한민국 공군 조종사의 직무스트레스 및 사회심리적 요인과 피로수준과의 관련성

    Abstract : This study was conducted to investigate the role of fatigue symptoms and their association with job stress contents and psychosocial factors in Korea Air Force pilots. The self-administered questionnaires were given to 284 pilots from April 1, 2013 to May 31, 2013. Concerning correlation of fatigue symptoms with various factors, the level of fatigue symptoms was positively correlated with job demand, type A behavior pattern and state-trait anxiety. But the level was negatively correlated with job autonomy, supervisor and coworker support and self-esteem. In logistic regression analysis, the adjusted odds ratio of the high risk fatigue symptoms is significantly decreased in higher groups of coworker support than that of their lower group. Instead, the adjusted odds ratio of the high risk fatigue symptoms is significantly increased in higher groups of locus of control and state-trait anxiety than in lower groups of theirs. Multiple regression analysis reveals that fatigue was significantly correlated with job autonomy, type A behavior pattern, state-trait anxiety. The study results indicat that the level of fatigue symptoms is influenced by JCQ (job demand, job autonomy, social support in work) and psychosocial factors (type A behavior pattern, locus of control, self-esteem, state-trait anxiety).

    Medical CRM 도입 필요성과 방안에 관한 고찰

    Abstract : Population based research suggests that in the United States between 44,000 and 98,000 patients die each year from preventable errors, making medical error the eighth most common cause of death. As early as 1994, the medical community began evaluating best practices from the aviation industry as a possible avenue for reducing errors that occur in operating rooms and trauma situations. Aviation crew resource management (CRM) training, based on effective communication and teamwork skills, may translate to healthcare through error management training. Aviation and healthcare have similar point that focused on safety and efficiency. Now we need to discuss on introducing CRM that was proved as one of the successful tool for reducing human error and increasing safety.

    민간 항공사 운항승무원 비행휴 현황(2016)

    Abstract : Good health is an essential element for pilots responsible for the flight safety. Airline issue sick leave to pilots who are not medically qualified to perform his/her professional aviation duty because of diseases. The goal of this study was to review sick leave rate and understand the main diseases of sick leave among airline pilots in 2016. This study analyzed the sick leave data registered electronic medical record system in the aeromedical center of an airline from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. The total cases of sick leave in 2016 were 2,204. The statistics showed the average rate of sick leave per 1,000 pilots in 2016 were 16. The frequency rate and severity rate of sick leave were 0.6 and 4.9. The organ systems with the highest prevalence of disease were the respiratory system (45.6%), digestive system (26.4%), and musculoskeletal system (14.1%), while those with the longest associated sick leave periods were the musculoskeletal system (28.0%), respiratory system (22.5%), and digestive system (18.4%).

    Abstract : In commemoration of Vol. 30, Issue 2, our journal prepared three review articles, two original papers, and a case report. The first review analyzed aircraft accidents caused by pilots' fatigue and presented a protocol to measure their fatigue, such as primary background survey, subjective drowsiness/arousal evaluation, sleep and activity log, sleep data, and performance measurement. The second review analyzed shift work patterns and work characteristics that may affect the fatigue of aviation mechanics. Also, desirable work principles for aviation mechanics (restrictions on working hours, appropriate rest hours, and night shift restrictions) were presented. The third review discussed the effects that allergic rhinitis can have on pilots (drowsiness and decreased arousal) and introduced a safe treatment method that can prevent these adverse effects. In the first original article, the ratio of 'incompatible (non-fit)' result in aerospace medical examination among Korean aircraft pilots for the past five years was investigated by age group and the common causes of nonconformity were analyzed. In the second original article, the prevalence, mortality, prevalence according to age groups, and regional characteristics of severe febrile thrombocytopenia syndrome were compared and analyzed in Korea and Japan for the past five years. Finally, in the case report, the cases of a patient diagnosed as gastrointestinal stromal tumors who received surgical treatment and chemotherapy were discussed, and the results of the judgment were presented.

    피로위험관리를 위한 조종사 피로측정방법 고찰

    Abstract : Pilot fatigue is a great hazard to aviation safety. In recent years, longdistance fights have been increasing and flight hours have been increasing, which has made fatigue issues important. International organizations in the aviation sectors (ICAO, FAA, IATA etc.) recommend management of fatigue within the SMS (Safety Management System) framework. A scientific and systematic approach to measuring fatigue is required as a prerequisite to preparing safety management measures for pilot’s fatigue. Therefore, in this study, I would like to consider recent trends and implications for fatigue measurement. First, I aimed to consider recent the accident cases related to fatigue. Second, I also considered how to measure the pilot’s fatigue. Finally, the direction of the countermeasures against fatigue through fatigue measurement was developed and suggested.

    Fatigue and Associated Factors among Airline Pilots

    Abstract : Purpose: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of fatigue and its associated factors leading to the fatigue among Korean commercial airline pilots. Methods: An anonymous, web-based questionnaire collecting data on sleep related characteristics was completed by airline pilots. The final 1,029 samples of completed questionnaires were analyzed. The association of the risk factors with fatigue was determined using logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of fatigue was 60% (Fatigue Severity Scale index≥3.2), disturbed sleep 28% (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index≥9), daytime sleepiness 17% (Epworth Sleepiness Scale≥10), and sleep apnea (Berlin Questionnaire≥2) 11%. The fully adjusted logistic regression showed that quality of life (odds ratio [OR]=0.16, confidence interval [CI]=0.11–0.24), daytime sleepiness (OR=1.26, CI=1.18–1.34), sleep quality (OR=1.44, CI=1.29–1.61), mental workload (OR=1.10, CI=1.05–1.14), vigorous physical activity (OR=0.82, CI=0.72–0.92), late starts (OR=1.25, CI=1.06– 1.46) and average weekly flying hours (OR=1.02, CI=1.00–1.03) were associated with higher levels of fatigue. Conclusion: Lower quality of life, disturbed sleep, more subjective sleepiness, shorter sleep duration, higher mental workload, less vigorous physical activity, frequent late starts, and longer flying hour were shown to be risk factors for fatigue in airline pilots. These findings should be taken into account in the development of sleep and fatigue countermeasures for airline pilots.

    항공 피로위험관리를 위한 생체수리적 모델 접근 방안

    Abstract : In the aviation sector, it is recommended to adopt an aviation safety management system (SMS) from international organizations (International Civil Aviation Organization, Federal Aviation Administration, etc.) and to apply a related system in each organization. Among them, fatigue management recommends fatigue risk management system (FRMS) operating as part of SMS proactive risk management. Advanced aviation organizations are developing and applying various related risk assessment techniques that consider characteristics in order to apply scientific and systematic FRMS. Among which the biomathematical fatigue model (BFM) are representative. The Bio-mathematical Model is designed to represent the level by converting it into a simple numerical score, taking into account various related factors for the measurement object. The BFM is tool to predict the level of fatigue of the crew based on scientific understanding of the factors that contribute to fatigue. The Biomathematical Model is used as a scientific approach that promotes the transition to a performance-based safety management. In this study, the recent trends and implications for the BFM developed and applied in the aviation field are to be reviewed. First, FRMS was considered within the SMS framework, then the characteristics and application methods of the BFM were examined, and finally, the direction of the development of the BFM was suggested.

    항공학과 학생들의 MBTI 성격 유형별 조직몰입 및 팀워크 역량 차이분석

    Abstract : Purpose: For students who have already decided on their career path by entering the aviation departments, this study aims to analyze organizational commitment and teamwork relationships using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality type as a tool. Methods: In order to investigate the career choices of aviation workers according to MBTI personality types, a survey was conducted targeting enrolled in and graduating from the aviation departments, and organizational commitment and teawork were analyzed using SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: Sening, Feeling, and Perceiving were mainly found in students who chose cabin crew as their career, whereas students in department of flight crew and aviation maintenance showed high level in Instuition, Thinkg, and Juding. As a result of the analysis, the MBTI type for each career path of aviation students was mainly ENTP for flight crew students, ESFP for cabin crew students, and INTP for aviation maintenance students. Conclusion: Even if students make their choice based on advice, subjective and objective judgments in choosing a career path, there are cases in which the chosen job does not suit them. Therefore, it is hoped that various indicators such as the MBTI will be used to help studnes choose their career path.

    비행훈련 시 학생조종사 인적요인 영향에 대하여

    Abstract : Purpose: Most aviation accidents are caused by human factors, and in recent years in Korea, human factors have been identified as the cause of 70% of aviation accidents. Human factors that influence pilots in the aviation field are closely linked to judgment ability and are crucial factors directly impacting flight proficiency. Methods: To explore the human factors that may affect student pilots during flight training, a survey was conducted among flight instructors holding pilot certificates. Results: The results aim not only to identify the human factors that can influence flight performance during training but also to establish a direction for safety by addressing the human factors related to student pilots, with the goal of maintaining safety. Conclusion: Understanding the human factors that affect student pilots, who will be responsible for transporting hundreds of passengers in the future, is essential for cultivating safety knowledge and risk management skills, making it a highly important matter for accident prevention.

    Deterioration and Recurrence in Flight Passengers with Ischemic Stroke: An Evidence Based Case Report

    Abstract : Ischemic stroke is a cerebrovascular disease characterized by a sudden neurological deficit due to thrombotic or embolic event. The physiological changes during in-flight related to high altitude, hypobaric hypoxic, is a condition that can affect blood circulation in the brain. There was limited evidence to prove the possibility of clinical condition deterioration and/or new onset of recurrent stroke among commercial flight passengers with ischemic stroke. This evidence-based case report aims to determine the possibility of clinical condition deterioration and/or new onset of recurrent stroke on commercial flight passengers with history of ischemic stroke related to hypoxia hypobaric during the in-flight or post-flight period. Three relevant articles were found in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and Ingenta library databases. After critical appraisal, all of the relevant articles were shown to be valid, important, and applicability with the level of evidence ranging from III–IV. There were no studies that reported a clinical condition deterioration and/or a new onset of recurrent stroke among commercial flight passengers with ischemic stroke. However, two studies reported a new case of ischemic stroke during in-flight with unknown etiology. Commercial flight passengers with history of ischemic stroke didn’t show any clinical condition deterioration and/or a new onset of ischemi stroke during in-flight or post-flight.

    Abstract : Blockchain is a type of distributed database managed through multiple network transaction details (P2P, Peer to Peer), and transaction information is stored on multiple computers (nodes) connected to the blockchain network instead of storing it in one server. It is an algorithm that binds transaction details to form blocks, connects multiple blocks like a chain, and then copies and distributes them by a large number of people. In the case of the aviation industry, it is worth making full use of blockchain technology to revolutionize existing systems and business processes in terms of cost and transaction transparency, so blockchain can become one of the innovative technologies that will change the paradigm of the aviation industry. As the blockchain market is still in an immature stage and the development of technology is expected in the future, it is necessary to prepare support measures to lead and preempt the global blockchain market in the future through development support and cooperation that can be actively used in the field.

    SHELL 모델에 근거한 의료사고 인적요인 분석의 탐색적 연구

    Abstract : The SHELL (Software, Hardware, Environment, Liveware) model is one of the models for determining the cause of aviation accidents. The human factors of medical accidents are analyzed through the SHELL model. This study is a case study that analyzed a total of three cases, including two medical accident court precedents and one large fire at a medical institution. In the human factor analysis of cases 1 and 2, the main factors were that liveware (human) violated the duty of care and did not follow the guidelines of the institution. The large fire incident in the hospital in Case 3 was caused by a lack of awareness of the safety of managers, the installation of illegal facilities and environments, lack of medical staff’s response and training, and the condition of patients who were mostly elderly. The liveware at the center of the SHELL model is the most important human factor, and the environment, facilities, and equipment surrounding liveware must be supplemented to prevent future medical accidents.

    Abstract : The space environment is a harsh space for humans who have evolved for a long time by adapting to the earth environment. The cosmic conditions that humans experience in outer space including the moon and Mars, such as altered gravity, exposure to cosmic radiation, changes in atmospheric pressure, and lunar dust, not only make the human body uncomfortable but also threaten survival. Space medicine is one of a field of environmental medicine that aims to clarify the physiology and response of body to these harmful space conditions. The primary purpose of space medicine is to protect the health and life of astronauts, and to support mission performance to succeed in space exploration. In addition, it contributes to mankind by utilizing and industrializing the knowledge and technology acquired in the process of developing knowledge about medical countermeasures, basic life support in the space.

After that, in 1995, it was developed for the purpose of collecting/analyzing flight data on technical defects and dangerous situations that occur in actual flights through voluntary participation programs by U.S. airlines. In the private sector, it has been regulated and operated in most countries since early 2000 according to the recommendations of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, civil airlines are required to conduct FOQA as part of Safety Management System in accordance with ICAO ANNEX-6. The U.S. Air Force benchmarks the FOQA safety program in the civilian sector and applies it under the name of Military FOQA. Therefore, in the Republic of Korea Air Force, there is a need to ensure flight safety in an objective and scientific way by deriving event parameters for the introduction of the flight data analysis system in order to perform predictive safety management in accordance with the trend of the times.

    Epidemiological Aspects of Hepatitis E Virus Infections between South Korea and Japan

    Abstract : In 1962, British Airways implemented Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) for the first time in order to reduce the rate of increase in aviation accidents, which could increase due to the expansion of the aviation industry and the increase in traffic. After that, in 1995, it was developed for the purpose of collecting/analyzing flight data on technical defects and dangerous situations that occur in actual flights through voluntary participation programs by U.S. airlines. In the private sector, it has been regulated and operated in most countries since early 2000 according to the recommendations of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, civil airlines are required to conduct FOQA as part of Safety Management System in accordance with ICAO ANNEX-6. The U.S. Air Force benchmarks the FOQA safety program in the civilian sector and applies it under the name of Military FOQA. Therefore, in the Republic of Korea Air Force, there is a need to ensure flight safety in an objective and scientific way by deriving event parameters for the introduction of the flight data analysis system in order to perform predictive safety management in accordance with the trend of the times.

    SHELL 모델에 근거한 의료사고 인적요인 분석의 탐색적 연구

    Abstract : The SHELL (Software, Hardware, Environment, Liveware) model is one of the models for determining the cause of aviation accidents. The human factors of medical accidents are analyzed through the SHELL model. This study is a case study that analyzed a total of three cases, including two medical accident court precedents and one large fire at a medical institution. In the human factor analysis of cases 1 and 2, the main factors were that liveware (human) violated the duty of care and did not follow the guidelines of the institution. The large fire incident in the hospital in Case 3 was caused by a lack of awareness of the safety of managers, the installation of illegal facilities and environments, lack of medical staff’s response and training, and the condition of patients who were mostly elderly. The liveware at the center of the SHELL model is the most important human factor, and the environment, facilities, and equipment surrounding liveware must be supplemented to prevent future medical accidents.

    항공학과 학생들의 MBTI 성격 유형별 조직몰입 및 팀워크 역량 차이분석

    Abstract : Purpose: For students who have already decided on their career path by entering the aviation departments, this study aims to analyze organizational commitment and teamwork relationships using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality type as a tool. Methods: In order to investigate the career choices of aviation workers according to MBTI personality types, a survey was conducted targeting enrolled in and graduating from the aviation departments, and organizational commitment and teawork were analyzed using SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: Sening, Feeling, and Perceiving were mainly found in students who chose cabin crew as their career, whereas students in department of flight crew and aviation maintenance showed high level in Instuition, Thinkg, and Juding. As a result of the analysis, the MBTI type for each career path of aviation students was mainly ENTP for flight crew students, ESFP for cabin crew students, and INTP for aviation maintenance students. Conclusion: Even if students make their choice based on advice, subjective and objective judgments in choosing a career path, there are cases in which the chosen job does not suit them. Therefore, it is hoped that various indicators such as the MBTI will be used to help studnes choose their career path.

    비행훈련 시 학생조종사 인적요인 영향에 대하여

    Abstract : Purpose: Most aviation accidents are caused by human factors, and in recent years in Korea, human factors have been identified as the cause of 70% of aviation accidents. Human factors that influence pilots in the aviation field are closely linked to judgment ability and are crucial factors directly impacting flight proficiency. Methods: To explore the human factors that may affect student pilots during flight training, a survey was conducted among flight instructors holding pilot certificates. Results: The results aim not only to identify the human factors that can influence flight performance during training but also to establish a direction for safety by addressing the human factors related to student pilots, with the goal of maintaining safety. Conclusion: Understanding the human factors that affect student pilots, who will be responsible for transporting hundreds of passengers in the future, is essential for cultivating safety knowledge and risk management skills, making it a highly important matter for accident prevention.

    포스트 코로나 대비 항공종사자 건강증진 방안: 싱잉볼 명상을 중심으로

    Abstract : COVID-19 has severely impacted the aviation industry, with air travel declining sharply and airlines cutting capacity as a result. Additionally, many countries have closed their borders to block spread of the virus. Air traffic controllers and pilots have also experienced negative effects, in that the experience required to maintain proficiency has decreased over the past three years. This has resulted in financial problems for airlines and air traffic control facilities, leading to increased job uncertainty and a manpower imbalance. As air traffic volumes begin to increase again, air traffic controllers and pilots responsible for passenger safety may experience extreme stress and anxiety in new situations. To address this problem, healthcare methods are needed to help aviation professionals to overcome stress and reduce anxiety. Meditation can stabilize the autonomic nervous system, promote relaxation and comfort in the mind and body, and could aid in smooth metabolism by suppressing the sympathetic nerves that cause our bodies to feel tension and activating the parasympathetic nerves. However, achieving the benefits of meditation can require time and effort, and general meditation can be challenging for individuals experiencing physical pain. Therefore, singing bowl meditation is recommended, as it can easily induce a meditative state. The sounds produced by Tibetan singing bowls can promote meditation by tuning the alpha waves, theta waves, and gamma waves of electoencephalography. Singing bowl meditation is a beneficial method for individuals with limited time or physical disabilities due to work schedules, such as air traffic controllers and pilots, to easily access meditation.

    Abstract : The space environment is a harsh space for humans who have evolved for a long time by adapting to the earth environment. The cosmic conditions that humans experience in outer space including the moon and Mars, such as altered gravity, exposure to cosmic radiation, changes in atmospheric pressure, and lunar dust, not only make the human body uncomfortable but also threaten survival. Space medicine is one of a field of environmental medicine that aims to clarify the physiology and response of body to these harmful space conditions. The primary purpose of space medicine is to protect the health and life of astronauts, and to support mission performance to succeed in space exploration. In addition, it contributes to mankind by utilizing and industrializing the knowledge and technology acquired in the process of developing knowledge about medical countermeasures, basic life support in the space.

    코로나바이러스감염증-19 후유증과 항공안전

    Abstract : Since its emergence in Wuhan, China, COVID-19 has spread and had a profound effect on the lives and health of people around the globe. Most people who develop COVID-19 fully recover, but current evidence suggests approximately 10% to 20% of people experience a variety of mid- and long-term effects after they recover from their initial illness. These mid- and long-term effects are collectively known as post covid-19 condition or “long COVID”. Studies have shown that a significant number of patients complain of multiple symptoms over a period of several months or longer. The symptoms of long covid include fatigue or muscle weakness, dyspnea, cognitive impairment, and depression or anxiety. These chronic symptoms can also negatively affect aviation safety. Therefore, this review summarizes studies of the long-term effects of COVID-19, and aeromedical implications of long COVID.
