COVID-19 Vaccination for Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers
Abstract : The coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccine is expected to play an important role in stopping the pandemic. Studies show that COVID-19 vaccines are effective at keeping you from getting COVID-19. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine will also help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get COVID-19. Efforts to find an effective vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 have progressed unprecedentedly through active support from public research grants and private-public partnership programs. Clinical studies have been actively conducted, and some vaccines are being vaccinated with approval for urgent use. The WHO has approved and supplied the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. In Korea, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for urgent use, and vaccination began on February 26, 2021. In this paper, the efficacy and side effects of each vaccines and the effect on pilots and air traffic controllers related to COVID-19 vaccination were investigated in terms of aviation medicine.

Understanding Peripheral Dizziness and Evaluating Suitability for Aviation Work
Abstract : Aircraft accidents caused by dizziness of aviation workers are so common that they account for 5% to 10% of the total, and in most cases, have fatal consequences. Therefore, it is essential to diagnose and treat the dizziness of aviation workers properly. Common diseases caused by abnormal vestibular function include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Meniere’s disease, and vestibular neuritis. In this paper, we first proposed an overview of these diseases’ pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Also, we evaluated the importance of these diseases in aerospace medicine and presented aerospace medical dispositions for aviation medical examiners.

COVID-19 감염증이 호흡기 알레르기 질환에 미치는 영향
The Influence of COVID-19 on Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis
Abstract : As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues, doctors face many difficulties in managing patients with respiratory allergies. As research continues, much new knowledge has emerged about the link between COVID-19 infection and respiratory allergies. Studies to date have shown that there is no significant increase in the risk of COVID-19 infection in patients with respiratory allergies. However, in patients undergoing treatment for moderate to severe asthma or allergic rhinitis, more severe clinical manifestations, increased hospitalization period, and increased mortality may occur, so patients need to be managed with more care. In addition to personal efforts, social consideration should be accompanied to prevent deterioration in patients’ quality of life with respiratory allergies due to COVID-19. Lastly, as clinical doctors, we should treat patients with respiratory allergies to protect ourselves appropriately by actively utilizing remote medical treatment and minimizing tests that generate droplets. Also, by appropriately educating patients and continuing drug treatment, efforts should be made to ensure that patients receive the best treatment even in a pandemic situation.

Case Study on Global Competency Reinforcement of Liberal Arts Education: Focusing on Non-Curricular Areas
Abstract : Purpose: The purpose of this study is to consider ways to strengthen it through comparison and curriculum while recognizing the importance of global competencies in liberal arts education in universities. Methods: In order to explore ways to reinforce the sub-competence of global competencies, this study was conducted at a four-year university in Chungcheong-do for one year in 2019, such as ‘Global Culture Talk’, ‘Global Travel’, ‘Global Nanta’, and ‘Making Global Friends’. Cases of comparison and application of educational programs were analyzed. The program was attended by the Department of Business Administration, Department of Aviation Service, Department of Design, Department of Manga Animation, Department of Broadcasting and Film, and foreign exchange students. The competency-centered curriculum not only has clear educational goals, but is also very advantageous in establishing a feedback system by measuring its performance. This study will assess the effectiveness of the education plan by diagnosing the change in competencies before and after the comparison and curriculum is operated. Results: The overall global competency has increased by 0.2 points compared to 2017. By sub-sector, it was found that the flexibility increased by 1.4 points. In the field of cross-cultural understanding, it rose 0.6 points, and in the field of global understanding, it rose 2.2 points, showing the largest increase in the sub-fields. Nevertheless, the field of global interest remains at a low level. This is considerably low compared to flexibility and ability to understand other cultures, and it is expected that measures for improvement should be continuously sought. Since the understanding of other cultures has already exceeded 60 points, it is expected that the global competency of the university will be strengthened if the level is consistently maintained and the emphasis is placed on enhancing flexibility and improving global understanding. Conclusion: The importance of strengthening global capabilities is steadily rising. Universities are also reorganizing the curriculum by analyzing the needs and satisfaction of education consumers to respond to this. The programs operated and analyzed in this study were also made as part of this effort. However, since there are various factors that affect global competency, it cannot be but admitted that it is not easy to gauge the change in competency with only a few programs and short-term efforts. However, if the efforts pursued by this study are accumulated and supplemented through feedback from a long-term perspective, it can be expected that there are not a lot of contributions to strengthening global competencies in liberal arts education.

COVID-19 시대에서 외국인의 자궁경부암 백신접종
Human Papillomavirus Vaccination for Foreigners during COVID-19 Era
Abstract : Purpose: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination schedule is recommended by Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization of World Health Organization to achieve high efficacy and immunogenicity. However, the patients often cannot keep up their schedule for several reasons. Methods: Monthly numbers of visitors for HPV vaccination between 2019 and 2021 were analyzed to measure the impact of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) outbreak which was the main cause of this delay. Results: In February 2020, the number of foreign patients vaccinated with HPV was dropped suddenly due to COVID-19. Prior to this impact, the average patients per month for HPV vaccination was 160 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 143–176). It was then 30 (95% CI: 20–40). However recent trends show a gradual recovery. Conclusion: If a woman is pregnant after starting the HPV vaccine series, the reminder doses should be delayed until she is no longer pregnant. If this series is interrupted for any length of time, it can be resumed without restarting the series. HPV vaccine series need to be administered with a minimum interval of 14 days before or after administration of COVID-19 vaccines.

Fatigue and Associated Factors among Airline Pilots
Abstract : Purpose: This study aimed to identify the prevalence of fatigue and its associated factors leading to the fatigue among Korean commercial airline pilots. Methods: An anonymous, web-based questionnaire collecting data on sleep related characteristics was completed by airline pilots. The final 1,029 samples of completed questionnaires were analyzed. The association of the risk factors with fatigue was determined using logistic regression analysis. Results: The prevalence of fatigue was 60% (Fatigue Severity Scale index≥3.2), disturbed sleep 28% (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index≥9), daytime sleepiness 17% (Epworth Sleepiness Scale≥10), and sleep apnea (Berlin Questionnaire≥2) 11%. The fully adjusted logistic regression showed that quality of life (odds ratio [OR]=0.16, confidence interval [CI]=0.11–0.24), daytime sleepiness (OR=1.26, CI=1.18–1.34), sleep quality (OR=1.44, CI=1.29–1.61), mental workload (OR=1.10, CI=1.05–1.14), vigorous physical activity (OR=0.82, CI=0.72–0.92), late starts (OR=1.25, CI=1.06– 1.46) and average weekly flying hours (OR=1.02, CI=1.00–1.03) were associated with higher levels of fatigue. Conclusion: Lower quality of life, disturbed sleep, more subjective sleepiness, shorter sleep duration, higher mental workload, less vigorous physical activity, frequent late starts, and longer flying hour were shown to be risk factors for fatigue in airline pilots. These findings should be taken into account in the development of sleep and fatigue countermeasures for airline pilots.
